Andreas Osiander (1498–1552), a contemporary of Martin Luther, took the view that if an event is recorded more than once in the gospels and in different connections, then it happened more than once. That should not be difficult many still do it today. Imagine what it was like reading the gospels with pre-critical eyes. One can of course discern these crucial advances clearly only in retrospect. The axioms that govern the current consensus emerged over that span of time.
